Walter Thomas Bartow was born July 28, 1917 in Alton, Madison County, Illinois the only child of Howard R. Bartow and Carrie Hunt. He married Marie Elaine Staubitz and they had two daughters, Elaine and Carolyn Ann. Following Maries death he married Laura Cox of Chattanooga, Tennessee. He graduated with honors from the University of Illinois with a degree in ceramic engineering.

He played professional baseball as a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs for a short time. He volunteered for duty in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a B-29 navigator during World War II. After the war he went to work for the Western Electric Company and helped design the microwave communication system. He was very active in charities involving handicapped children and adults.

He was a member of the Scottish Rite, Shrine, Elks, Kiwanis, American Legion and Military Officers of America. He was raised a Master Mason February 28, 1981 in Euclid Lodge and served as Master of the Lodge in 1985 and 1986.

He died November 16, 2006 in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee and donated his body to medical research at the Vanderbilt Medical Center.
