Bernard Jacob Steffes was born March 11, 1908 in Naperville, DuPage County, Illinois the son of Theodore Jacob Steffes and Mary Lies. He married Marjorie Garrison and they had two children, David and Mary Ann.

He was employed by his father at T. J. Steffes Plumbing and Heating Contractors, then as a core maker at a foundry in Aurora, Illinois. He was employed by the Ohio Inspection and Weights Bureau in Cleveland Ohio until his death.

He was raised a Master Mason June 18, 1929 in Euclid Lodge and served the Lodge as Master in 1938.

He died, January 8, 1945. He was buried in the Lake Street Memorial Park, Elgin, Kane County, Illinois.
