David Hess was born February 7, 1814 in Schoharie, Schoharie County, New York the son of Christian and Margaret Hess. He came to Naperville about 1840. He married Adela M. Wight, the adopted daughter of General Edmund B. Bill on November 10, 1847 and from this union five children were born, Walter, Adeline, Mary B., Harry and Margaret. He was a physician, banker, builder and farmer. He operated the Preemption House for several years after his wife inherited it upon the death of Hannah Bill. He served as Naperville Township Supervisor in 1854. He was raised a Master Mason March 26, 1850 in Euclid Lodge and served as Master in 1851. He also served as High Priest of Euclid Chapter No. 13, Royal Arch Masons in 1854 and 1856. He died April 15, 1885 in Naperville, DuPage County, Illinois and was buried in the Naperville Cemetery. |
