Milton Skinner Ellsworth was born September 8, 1829 in Troy, Albany County, New York the son of Lewis Ellsworth and Chloe Marie Skinner. He came with his family to Naperville in 1837. He completed his common school education and then attended the Rock River Academy in Mt. Morris, Illinois, pursuing his studies there for a year and a half. He married Jane E. Barber May 22, 1854 and they had two children, twins, Lewis and Carrie.

He clerked in his father’s store in Naperville and afterwards went into partnership with him in the nursery business. Later he went to work in the Internal Revenue Service office and in 1877 he was elected DuPage County Clerk and remained in that position until his death.

He was raised a Master Mason April 18, 1851 in Euclid Lodge. He served as Master of the Lodge in 1867 and 1868. He was also a member of Euclid Chapter No. 13, R. A. M. and served as High Priest in 1871.

He died May 25, 1896 in Wheaton, DuPage County, Illinois and was buried in the Naperville Cemetery.
