Silas Orcasto Vaughan was born June 6, 1821 in Hanover, Grafton County, New Hampshire the son of Silas T. Vaughan and Mary Polly Ingalls. He received a limited education in the public schools of Hanover, and at the age of eleven was determined to learn the blacksmiths trade. He served in that capacity for seven years and then traveled to Attica, New York and there worked at his trade until July, 1845 when he came to Naperville.

He married Caroline Sabin September 11, 1850 in Naperville and from this union five children were born, Edward E., William, Mary Marcy, Albert S., and Julia. He continued in the blacksmith business in Naperville, forming a partnership with Adiel S. Jones in the plow manufacturing business under the name of the Naperville Plow Factory. In 1858 he moved with his family to DeKalb, Illinois and continued working in the blacksmith business for another twenty years. He then was engaged in the insurance business until his death. He also served as City Clerk for DeKalb, Illinois for twenty years and also as Collector and President of the Board of Trustees in 1865.

He was raised a Master Mason March 11, 1851 in Euclid Lodge, serving as Master of the Lodge in 1858. He was also a member of Euclid Chapter No. 13, Royal Arch Masons and served as the Most Excellent Grand High Priest of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of the State of Illinois in 1880.

He died March 10, 1906 in DeKalb, DeKalb County, Illinois and was buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, Dekalb, Illinois.
