Newton Jerome Wagner was born January 12, 1871, in Naperville, DuPage County, Illinois the son of Richard Henry Wagner and Rose Ann Schuler. He was raised in Naperville, where he attended the public schools and became well known through his active and enthusiastic spirit. During these years he was a regular attendant at the Grace Church Sunday School and was a charter member of the Baraca Sunday school class. He married Hattie B. ? about 1894. He also was married to Sarah (Sadie) Gardner Balsten June 2, 1924 in Saginaw, Michigan. 

 

He operated a jewelry store in downtown Naperville and after selling the store, operated a fly net factory. The last 21 years of his life he lived in Flint, Michigan, where he worked for the Buick company, first as a mechanic and in his last years as a guide showing visitors through the plant.

He became interested in the work of the Masonic Lodge and he was raised a Master Mason on April 21, 1903 in Euclid Lodge and served as Master of the Lodge in 1909.He also served Euclid Lodge as Senior Warden in 1908, as Junior Warden in 1906, and as Senior Deacon in 1904. He was a member of  Euclid Chapter No. 13, Royal Arch Masons and served as High Priest in 1912 and 1913. He was also an active member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite and had the unusual distinction of being corinated a 33rd Degree Mason.

He died April 3, 1940, in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan. He was buried in Naperville Cemetery with Masonic Rites held at the grave.
